Choosing a treat should not feel like reading a chemistry textbook. Still, it is worth taking a closer look at the ingredients. A short and transparent recipe makes it easier to understand what your dog is actually eating.

What does monoprotein mean?

A monoprotein product contains only one source of animal protein. This can be chicken, lamb, horse or rabbit, for example.

This can be particularly helpful if you want to keep your dog’s diet simple or already know which types of meat work well for them. However, monoprotein does not automatically mean that a product is suitable for every dog. The individual ingredients and your dog’s needs still matter.

What are novel proteins?

Novel proteins are animal protein sources that a dog has rarely or never eaten before. Whether a protein is truly novel therefore depends on the dog’s previous diet.

Horse, lamb and rabbit are often considered less commonly used protein sources. They may be an interesting option for dogs that do not tolerate frequently used proteins well. However, they are not automatically healthier than chicken, beef or other familiar varieties.

For us, they are another way to offer a varied and carefully selected range.

Why short recipes matter to us

The fewer ingredients a product contains, the easier it is to understand its composition. This is especially useful for dogs with individual preferences or sensitivities.

We therefore look for products with a high proportion of animal protein and avoid unnecessary fillers, added sugar, added salt, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

A small number of our products contain tiny amounts of glycerine or maize starch. These ingredients are not inherently bad. Why two ingredients work particularly well in our salmon roll

Our salmon roll combines salmon and cod. That means it is not a monoprotein product, but it was still a very deliberate addition to our range.

It contains exactly two animal ingredients and provides more than 80 percent protein. This makes it one of the real protein powerhouses in the LEVANS selection.
